Tom and the Peloton 2019, Ventoux Rouge, France

A Ventoux Rouge Syrah/Grenache blend made by Domaine des Anges in the heart of Ventoux. This is a small batch release as a mark of respect for Tom Simpson, one of Britain’s greatest ever professional cyclists who was the first British rider to wear the Yellow Jersey and compete in the Tour de France in 1962. Sadly, during the thirteenth stage of the Tour of 1967 Tom collapsed and died during an ascent of Mont Ventoux at the age of 29. A portion of the proceeds of each bottle sold is donated to the Simpson family to help maintain the memorial.

Tommy Simpson’s palmares include World Champion 1965, winner of the Tour of Flanders 1961 and wearer of the yellow jersey in the 1962 Tour de France.

This is a charming blend of Syrah and Grenache from Ventoux. It has tons of red fruit to the fore. Notes of spice come from the Syrah in the shape of subtle black pepper and the tiniest hint of liquorice. It has a lovely balanced nature and feels much lighter than the fairly hefty alcohol content might suggest. A very quaffable, easy drinking wine, it’s best served with stews or braises.
